Steve Kovach graduated from Mankato State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies and a minor in Psychology. He earned his Master of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s University and his Education Specialist degree and administrative licensure from the University of St. Thomas.
Steve came to Albert Lea Schools and became the principal of Southwest in 2013. He spent the first 20 years of his career in education in Lakeville Area Schools where he was a Social Studies teacher (History, Global Studies, Sociology and Economics), was a Teaching and Learning coordinator, as well as a middle school Dean/Assistant Principal.
Steve’s wife, Linda, is a middle school Reading teacher and he has a son, Alex, and a daughter, Leah. He enjoys waterfowl and upland bird hunting, fishing, and anything outdoors. He is a self-described “crazy hockey person” and can’t get enough of the game. He’s excited about the achievements Southwest has made since he arrived--Silver Star of Innovation Award from the MASSP, first Blue Zone certified school in Minnesota, and most recently, Southeast Division Middle School Principal of the Year. He is looking forward to much more student success this year and beyond!
